If I choose to book a consultation with the firm, is it only done online or can I select an in person consultation?

Depending on your geographical location, in-person consultations can be arranged with our attorneys. We currently have attorneys in Durban and Johannesburg. Should you not work or reside in those areas, we advise booking a virtual consultation.

Do you charge for a consultation?

We offer a 15-minute free virtual or in-person consultation. If your matter is more complex, we strongly advise you to book an hour long consultation so we can discuss your legal issue in greater detail and ascertain if we can assist you.

How do you bill for your legal services?

Our attorneys track the work done on your matter on our digital practice management system. They input the time spent on the activity, what was done and when the work was carried out. After which, they generate a detailed invoice based off of those activities and disbursements. The invoice is sent to your email address along with the firms banking details.

What should I bring to my first consultation?

We advise that you prepare a brief summary of facts, this will keep the meeting concise and focused. You may also bring all relevant supporting documentation you have in your possession.

How much will my matter end up costing me?

At the onset it is hard to provide an exact indication of how much a matter will end up costing you as a client. There are a number of factors that can influence how much a client will end spending on legal fees. However, our attorneys do provide an estimation of costs at the onset of your matter. This figure is just an estimation and legal fees can be more or less. We always strive to resolve our clients matters in the most cost-effective manner and ensure that your legal fees to do not become excessively high.

Will I be able to easily contact my attorney?

As soon as your matter is created, the responsible attorney will contact you either telephonically, via email or both. You will have their contact details in the event that you wish to contact them about your legal matters. You can also speak to your attorney about which communication form and times best suit your working relationship.

How will I be kept informed of my case?

Before becoming a client of the firm, we furnish all new clients with a letter of engagement. The letter sets out the working relationship between the attorney and client. On the last page of the letter you can let your attorney know how you wish to receive updates on your matter and how often.

Can a payment plan be arranged for me to settle my legal bills with the firm?

Yes, you may set up a payment arrangement with the firm to settle your legal bills. This arrangement may be done at the start of your matter or during, if your financial circumstances do change. The most important aspect is that you openly communicate the need for a payment arrangement with your attorney. Non-payment of invoices will result in a delay of work being completed on your matter or legal action instituted against you.

Will there be more than one attorney working on my matter?

There is usually one attorney working on your matter. However, if the matter is more complex, requires more time and expertise, your attorney might need to acquire assistance from another attorney at the firm.

What is the typical legal process like?

The typical legal process differs depending on the legal field or area of law you are dealing with. Family law processes will differ significantly from contract law process. Criminal law proceedings are vastly different to Civil litigation proceedings.

Depending on the nature of your claim and legal issue, the Stewart Attorney team is trained to guide you through the process and procedural steps from your first consultation at the firm to the point where your matter is settled.

How long will my matter take?

We can never say with certainty how long your matter will take and we refrain from making promises to our clients on time frames. While we strive to resolve your matter as soon as possible, there are a number of unforeseen delays or postponements that may occur. However, you can be assured that our team of highly skilled attorneys will work hard to resolve your matter in a reasonable amount of time.
